Of COURSE someone is pounding on my door, hopping in their car, and speeding away.
Just another day in the life...
I was awoken in the middle of the night, last night, to the sound of someone pounding on my front door.
Yep! I was terrified.
"[Spawn]!! Are you there? Did you hear that??"
My heart was beating out of my chest as I quietly yelled over to my daughter.
"I'm here. Yah, I could hear it."
Her voice was shaky, she was scared too.
"Do you know who that was?"
"How would I know who that was?!?"
I slipped out of my bed and went into her room, closing the door.
We sat on her bed and listened for a moment...
"I think they drove away, Mom. I could hear them drive away, fast."
"How did you hear them?"
"My window is open."
Staring at her closed curtain, I immediately told her to close it and lock it.
Not quite sure what to do, I grabbed my phone and slowly opened her bedroom door.
The house was dark, and silent....
Under the cover of darkness, I crept from room to room, making sure we were still alone in the house. Checking both doors, both doors were still locked, and all of the windows were locked as well.
"Should I turn on a light??"
"Yah..."
I turned on one of the lamps in the living room and retreated back to my bedroom.
Hands shaking, I texted my boys to make sure it wasn't either of them trying to get my attention at the door.
It wasn't.
I was terrified for a very long moment....
Whoever was at the door was pounding on that door.
Not going to lie... In the 5 years that I have lived here, I've been scared by a lot of stuff.
Peacocks
Deer
Turkeys
Possums
But, this is the first time I've been scared of something human.
I don't know folks....
Anyone that knew me, would have texted me if they were going to be showing up at my house.
The Spawn swears it isn't anyone she knows.
So, I'm left wondering, who shows up at a house, in the middle of the night, and just starts banging on the door??
It was obvious this house is lived in...
Three vehicles in the yard, porch furniture, flowers everywhere.....
Who would burgle a house that was occupied??
I'm at a loss.
And, I'm a lil bit scared this might happen again tonight.
Wish me luck that it doesn't!

Yes you should get a security camera, perhaps even a security system, it probably was someone with the wrong address but you never know.
I did order a some security stuff online, yesterday. It'll be here Monday.
Hopefully it was someone calling at the wrong house. A security camera may be a good investment.
If you don't already, get security cameras. If the same thing happens again, you'll have video so the police will at least have some evidence to file with the report. And yeah, sensor lights is also a good idea.
I'm Soooo Sorry you had to go thru that,I feel for your Daughter & you,get surveillance around your house & put something in every room to protect you two
It's on my list of things to do for Saturday. I did keep my outside lights on tonight, just in case.
Ding Dong Ditch videos seem to becoming more popular on social media especially with the young ebike community. Also lookup recent videos on "Door kick challenge" around Philadelphia.
I looked it up and watched a few clips. I watched one where a kid used his elbow to bang on the screen door - that actually sounded very similar to what was happening at my house. These tik tok challenges are out of control... When it starts to affect other people it's not ok.

If I were to guess ... some drunk who had the wrong house and sped off once they realized, or some drunk/high bunch of teens who thought pounding on a door in the middle of the night was funny. Burglars are quiet. I would alert the police if it happens again.
and buy a motion sensor porch light
The light is on my list for today. That and ring cameras for both doors. Living up north, it has always felt kind of safe, like you could trust your neighbors... etc. The problem is, I live in a perfect vacation spot that triples in size in the summer. There are many, many people who come up here that aren't my actual neighbors.
Hopefully it was the wrong house and won’t happen again. If it does happen again I’d definitely notify law enforcement. I’m sur3 you and your daughter were terrified, probably still am. Do you have outside lights, floodlights, porch light? If you do I’d turn them all on.
I did turn my outside lights on tonight. So far tonight, it hasn't happened, thank God. I've had a really hard time sleeping because of it all. It's just so crazy.
@secret_lade Maybe it was a prank by some teens. But I can understand your uneasiness and having trouble sleeping. Keep those lights on!
First off, get a camera or two. Secondly and most likely some stupid kids playing a prank.
Seriously though get a camera or two, either Ring or Blink. I have mine looking out the glass of the front door and very few people see it.akea for some interesting videos.
I was talking about this with my boss today and he'd said the same thing. I am really hoping it was just a simple mix up or stupid kids. It bothers me that this kind of stuff doesn't happen here, at least it never has in the past. Why would it start now?
@secret_lade Well, kids will be kids. Probably drove down the road and said, oh let's bang on that one.
There's videos galore online of idiots doing just that. Also, videos of some of those idiots being arrested for attempted breaking and entering.
