The last minute back out...
I hate the last minute back out.
You've made plans. You've made preparations. You've made time in your schedule to make this meet happen.
And then you get the notification....
'Hey, I hate to do this, but I'm not going to be able to meet. My grandma's neighbor's son's cat is having surgery and I just have to be there, there is no other way.'
Uh, yah.... That sounds legit.
"Can we do a rain check?"
Therein lies the question...
What do I do?
I awoke this morning to the dreaded rain check text...
I had planned to meet with a friend after work today, only, he now has to take care of his teenage son who is getting his wisdom teeth extracted.
Ok....
And on Tuesday, when we had planned to meet, he had promised his son he would do an event with him.
The original impromptu meet last week?
Canceled an hour before because his 'kids were fighting' and he had to take care of things.
Anyone else seeing a pattern here?
In the grand scheme of things, how many rain checks is... Too many??
For me, this one is too many.
I don't hold anything against this person, but what I'm seeing is this - as soon as the meet feels real, he gets nervous and uses his children to back out.
He can safely hide behind the Good Parent Shield and deflect any issues on me.
I'm a good parent, my kids need me!

I've been there, done that.
Except, as a human being, I know...
I've also been there, done that, and had those last minute anxieties and used my children to back out of a plan.
If this were meant to happen, it would have happened already; when we really do want something, we find a way to make it happen.
Which leads me to this...
Sometimes a friend was meant to... Just be a friend.
I think this guy? Will just be a friend...

Maybe this is one of those dodged bullets...Things do happen for a reason. Perhaps if we'd met, I'd wished we hadn't.

I have to agree... They can have many definitions.
Rain checks are understandable now and then, but when they become a pattern, it’s usually a sign. Some connections just work better as friendships.
For this particular guy…. I think friendship it is.

Ah yes, the rain check/oops message, I have received some of those. I'm usually a relaxed kinda guy and understand things happen but for me twice is enough. If I was the one trying to set up the meets, I stop. If she/they were trying, my free time became booked. Eventually the conversation dies and I note their profile usually with the term Flake(s). Much easier on a similar site that allows you to put notes on their profile that only you can see.
I would suggest you do the same, it will save you time, money and sanity.

He is the one setting up the meets. Like, why bother if you don’t plan on going through with them? I replied and said I would have to pass. He hasn’t responded, so I may also be ghosted now. Completely his loss, I’m pretty sure I’m kind of a catch, maybe not a perfect one, but a catch nonetheless.
After two back outs I’d say enough. Like the old saying, “ shit or get off the pot”.
